Aviation Department Unveils Intermodal Plan
The Kansas City Aviation Department and Trammell Crow Co. recently released the master plan for the KCI Intermodal BusinessCentre. This will be an 800-acre multiuse development on the southeast corner of Kansas City International Airport's airfield.
The first phase will involve a 300-acre parcel south of the American Airlines overhaul base at Prairie View Road and Interstate 29 on the east edge of the airport. Seven buildings at a combined 2.7 million square feet, will be built for intermodal distribution and logistics, as well as light manufacturing. Construction is scheduled to start late in the fall. The first building will be approximately 525,000 square feet.
The project's second phase calls for infrastructure for 400 acres of land adjacent to the main runways of KCI. The land will be well-suited for development of air cargo facilities, air freight logistics, light manufacturing and assembly, and commercial distribution space.

Logistics Education Focus Group
Current logistics education programs in the KC region provide training in truck driving, railroad management and logistics. SmartPort is working with a small core committee to develop training and education at all levels in supply chain management.
The goal is to gain national recognition for the KC-area program and generate a new workforce pipeline at all levels.
Focus groups will be held with area logistics companies to determine skill needs and gaps. The information gathered will be used to partner with a local university to begin to develop curriculum for the program.
CenterPoint Completes Purchase of Richards-Gebaur
The Kansas City Business Journal reported that CenterPoint Properties completed their purchase of the former Richards-Gebaur Memorial Airport from the City of Kansas City and the Port Authority of Kansas City. The final investment was $10 million.
The purchase clears the way for CenterPoint to begin developing the former air force base into 1,400-acre industrial park. The park will serve an intermodal hub to be developed and leased by Kansas City Southern.

SmartPort’s Trade Data Exchange Leads to Efficiency
During the proof-of-concept phase, the Trade Data Exchange (TDE) allowed a local KC company to shave two thirds off its normal time to deliver a truckload of freight to a customer in Mexico. This didn’t just happen once, but twice on two different occasions.
The ability to manage that shipment by utilizing a data exchange significantly improved the company’s supply chain efficiency. This is the main value proposition for companies to take advantage of the TDE.
