President Bush Lends an Ear to SmartPort’s Chairman
KC SmartPort Chairman, John Wagner, was one of a few Kansas Citians invited to welcome the President to the Kansas City last week. John used this opportunity to make brief comments to the President about KC SmartPort and the KC Customs Port Facility.
President Bush was arriving in Kansas City following a meeting with the leaders of Canada and Mexico where he had participated in discussions concerning border issues.
Such an opportunity to greet the President was a great honor for John as well as SmartPort. Our exposure and recognition at a local, regional and national level continue to grow.
Animal Health Companies Learn About Trade and Cargo Assets
Kansas City’s animal health companies have significant benefits to being located in the region. Several benefits include Kansas City’s International Airport and the Greater Kansas City Foreign Trade Zone.
Consider this – KCI moves more air cargo than any airport in the six-state Midwest region, and the Kansas City area has more Foreign Trade Zone designated space than anywhere else in the U.S.
More than 125 animal health companies are doing business in the Kansas City area.
The six states region including MO, KS, NE, IA, OK, and AR dominate in the production of serums, vaccines and biological products for veterinary use. In 2006, nationally over 245 million dollars of serums, vaccines, and biological products for veterinary use were shipped by Air Cargo.
Last year, 940,000 square feet of foreign trade zone space was activated for the animal health industry’s use. The value of goods processed in that space amounted to $85.7 million, and $68.1 million was paid in payroll and benefits. Add on the $90,000 in duties paid, and that amounts to big business possibilities for air cargo in Kansas City.
SmartPort Launches Trade Data Exchange Tracking System
KCB Magazine featured SmartPort’s TDE project in an article titled “SmartPort’s Central Exchange,” in the September 2007 issue.
The article cites Fujifilm Sericol’s experience with an early test of the technology, which cut their shipping time by more than seven days. The magazine validated the TDE’s ability to increase both efficiency and safety for shipments moving across the country, “Fujifilm Sericol found TDE to be such a productive tool that it now plans to use the system for all of its shipments, which will allow the company to reduce inventory and save money.”
While the TDE system isn’t a new concept, this is the first time for such an application in the logistics sector.

Air Cargo and the Global Economy
According to Gary Bartek, Manager of Air Cargo Development at Kansas City International Airport and Chairman of The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA), air cargo services are playing “a major role” in the development of our global economy.
Airport magazine recently spoke to Gary about the national industry trends for air cargo.
“Air cargo is big business,” says Bartek, “generating an estimated $52 billion a year in direct revenue and substantially more in related trucking and logistics services.” Nearly 30 percent of all internationally traded goods are transported by air. That’s around $1.9 trillion in goods annually.
TIACA’s recently commissioned study on “The Impact of Air Cargo on the Global Economy,” shows that growth in air cargo services has outpaced growth in global exports, production, and economic growth by more than 80 percent over the last ten years.
As a result, the air cargo industry is planning for uninterrupted rapid growth. It is estimated that internationally traded goods will rise from the current 20 percent to 80 percent by the year 2020.
