KC a Top Logistics City

Logistics Today credits Kansas City as having a geographical advantage when considering potential logistics site selection decision.  Three area projects, the KCI Business Air Park, International Freight Gateway at Richards-Gebaur and the Kansas City Logistics Hub near Gardner, Kan., were featured as economic growth that contributes to the development of Kansas City as an intermodal hub.  Logistics Today also gave Kansas City their top-tier rating, categorizing it as a five star logistics city.

The Market for Distribution Center Space in KC Changes

The market demand for distribution center space in KC is growing and as a result Kansas City will have its first speculative distribution center.  Plans for the 592,515 square-foot distribution center are underway.

The decision to construct speculative distribution center space in the KC market is a milestone for KC SmartPort and KCADC’s efforts.  In 2006 KC SmartPort with KCADC attracted build-to-suit, big-box distribution centers such as a 400,000-square-foot Pacific Sunwear facility in Olathe, Kan., a 702,000-square-foot Musician’s Friend facility, in Kansas City, Mo. and a 500,000-square-foot facility in Cameron, Mo.

Supply Chain Visibility Important to the Industry

KC SmartPort and its vendor partner – EDS, listened to the industry and started the development of a trade data exchange that will provide real time, accurate data related to freight movement, supply chain efficiency and freight security.  Phase I development is underway with Phase II to begin in late second quarter with a fully functional system up and running by the 1st quarter of 2008.
