KC SmartPort Selects New Chairman
Ken Hoffman steps down after two-year term
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oct. 26, 2006 – John E. Wagner, Jr., president of Wagner Industries, Inc. accepted the KC SmartPort Board of Directors’ nomination today to serve as the organization’s chairman.
“KC SmartPort wants to make the Kansas City region the No. 1 logistics center in the nation,” said Wagner. “I look forward to helping them do just that.”
In 2007, KC SmartPort will continue its efforts to work with the Kansas City Area Development Council to bring new, significant transportation and logistics-based companies to the metro. It also will continue its work on developing intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that can track, trace and secure shipments coming into, from and through the Kansas City area.
Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) and the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) predict the use of ITS in addition to efforts to attract distribution centers to the region will increase the KC area's Gross Regional Product by $870 million in ten years. It also calculates that these efforts will create 9,200 new full-time jobs.
Wagner succeeds Ken Hoffman, lead attorney for the transportation practice at the law firm of Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin LLP, who is stepping down after a two-year term.
As an affiliate of the Kansas City Area Development Council (KCADC), KC SmartPort was founded in 2001 in partnership with the Mid-America Regional Council and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.
KC SmartPort worked alongside the KCADC this year to bring more than 1.8 million square feet of new distribution and warehousing space into the KC market.
